INSPIRE Services
INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe (INSPIRE) is an EU initiative to create a common spatial data infrastructure that facilitates cross-border access to spatial information.
Context
The INSPIRE Directive (2007/2/EC) requires Member States to describe geodata in a uniform manner and to make it available via standardised services, including view services and download services. The aim is to promote the use of geoinformation for environmental policy decisions and sustainable development.
The directive is legally binding for EU Member States and contains explicit implementation deadlines. In Switzerland, there is no direct obligation, but the Federal Act on Geoinformation (Geoinformation Act, GeoIA) can also be regarded as an INSPIRE-compliant implementation and legal basis for Switzerland.
In addition to the Swiss guidelines, all FSDI geodata is categorized in accordance with the INSPIRE guidelines. They can be explored in the map viewer map.geo.admin.ch under the topic ‘INSPIRE’.
