Switzerland has designated 10 waterbird and migratory bird reserves of international importance and 25 of national importance. They are an important wintering and resting place for migratory birds. Every year, hundreds of thousands of waterfowl and migratory birds winter in Swiss waters. They also serve to protect and conserve the waterbirds that live in Switzerland all year round.

The designation of the reserves is based on an inventory of the Swiss Ornithological Institute Sempach. The designation of waterbird areas in this scientific inventory is based on the criteria of the Ramsar Convention.
